FAQ

Driver education is an exciting moment in a teenagers life and there are many questions out there. Here is a list of frequently asked questions that may help. If you don’t see what you are looking for, please feel free to contact us.

  • How old does the student have to be in order to enroll in a Segment 1 course?
    Students must be at least 14 years and 8 months old by the first day of class in order to attend.
  • What is Segment 1?
    Segment 1 consists of 24 hours of classroom instruction, 6 hours on-the-road instruction, and 4 hours of observation. If you are under the age of 18 you are required to take Segment I by the State of Michigan in order to receive a Level 1 Learner's License.
  • What materials do students need to bring to the first day of Segment 1?
    Photocopy of their birth certificate Segment 1 Contract - see "Forms and Contracts" Payment for Class (Complete online prior to class start) Notebook and pen/pencil
  • What is the refund policy for Segment 1?
    Should you decide for any reason to withdraw from the program within 24 hours notice or the first 2 days of classroom instruction, your fee less $50 will be fully refunded. If you withdraw after the first 2 days, no refund will be given. No refunds will be issued until all supplies are returned to the instructor. Should you decide to withdraw from the program with more than 24 hours notice, your fee less $25 will be fully refunded. To request a program change without penalty, a 2 week notice must be given, otherwise a $25 transfer fee will be issued. Emergency situations will be determined on an individual basis by Green Light Driving Academy.
  • What are the requirements for a student to enroll in a Segment 2 course?
    Students must possess a valid Level 1 Learner's License for a minimum of 3 months and have completed at least 30 hours of on-the-road driving with parents. At least 2 of the 30 hours must be night time driving.
  • What is Segment 2?
    Segment 2 consists of 6 hours of classroom instruction. The course will discuss defensive driving, drinking and driving, road rage, and will help to prepare the student for their Road Test. If you are under the age of 18 you are required to take Segment 2 by the State of Michigan in order to be eligible for a Road Test.
  • What materials do students need to bring to the first day of Segment 2?

  • What if I took Segment I at a different driving school?
    Everyone is eligible to take Segment 2 from Green Light Driving Academy no matter where you took Segment 1.
  • What is the refund policy for Segment 2?
    If a student fails to attend class, no refund will be given. Cancelled courses will incur a $10 fee. To request a program change without penalty, a 48 hour or more notice is required or a $10 fee will be added to the account. If less than a 24 hour notice is given to cancel a program date, the entire payment will be forfeited. Emergency situations will be determined on an individual basis by Green Light Driving Academy.
  • When am I eligible to take the Road Test?
    Students are eligible to take the Road Test once they have held their Level 1 Learner's License for 6 months or more, have completed the Segment 2 course, and have driven the required 50 hours on-the-road driving with parents (at least 10 hours must be night time driving).
  • Can I take my Road Test before I turn 16?
    Yes, as long as you have met all the requirements for the Road Test you can take the test prior to your 16th birthday. However, you are not eligible to visit Secretary of State and apply for your license until your 16th birthday.
  • Where can I take my roadtest?

  • How long will the Driver's Training process take?
    Students under the age of 18 are required by the State of Michigan to take both Segment 1, Segment 2, and a Road Test. The entire process will take 7 or more months to complete.
  • What is the Michigan Graduated License System?

  • What if school is cancelled due to inclement weather?
    We will contact you if we choose to cancel your drivers education class due to inclement weather. It will also be posted on our facebook page. If we need to cancel, we will reschedule accordingly.
  • What type of vehicles do you use?
    Our vehicles are all midsize, four-door, American-made vehicles which receive regular maintenance. The vehicles are equipped with an instructor and brake pedal.
  • Do you offer adult oriented courses?
